Class Newsletter May 2024

Message from President Martin Hill

Martin Hill

The 2024 Fremantle Worlds were a terrific success – congratulations to the Swan River Fleet and the three organising yacht clubs on a wonderful regatta on and off the water. It’s hard to believe it’s only seven months to the 2025 Worlds in Melbourne.

The class is proud of the high calibre of world-renowned sailors who sail Etchells, we are also very keen to support Corinthian and Youth teams. I am personally sponsoring a youth team for the upcoming Worlds. Jack Abbott's team will compete in Lisa Rose for all the events leading up to the Worlds, including NSW States, Metung Nationals and Pre-Worlds. Jack’s crew have supported the Etchells class as a youth team for over 2 years now and aim to excite more youth sailors to participate with them. It is hoped that over ten youth teams will compete in the Melbourne Worlds, including two boats from HK, two from the UK, two from NSW, and two from Victoria.

Jack Abbott and I are working with RSYS to grow the local Corinthian fleet and the skills of its sailors. The programme will be under the banner of Club Corinthian—for the love of sailing. The RSYS season will be kicked off with a new point score for Corinthian crews and on-water coach clinics for rig tune, boat handling, and overall performance. The clinics are open to all crews and will be videotaped and shared online. We know that several fleets nationwide have their initiatives to encourage Youth and Corinthian sailors.

Issuing of Measurement Certificates

The International Etchells Class Association is centralising the issuing of hull certificates. The process for applying for a new hull certificate hasn’t changed – it simply means the certificate is issued by the IECA rather than Australian Sailing. The Australian website now points to the IECA.
