Kylie Wilson,

The Sydney Fleet closed out its season in April with a race programme of more than 60 club races, plus the Milson Silver Goblets.

Since season close, the Sydney Fleet performed strongly at the recent Australasian Championship at Mooloolaba, winning the Fleet Trophy once more, with seven boats finishing in the top 20. Mothy and James Mayo with GT have formed an outstanding Sydney/Melbourne combination to win the regatta; meanwhile Tom King put his 2012 World Championship winning team back together on the new Iron Lotus, and with limited preparation, looked threatening and took out second place.

Congratulations also to Jeanne-Claude Strong, who was named 2016 RSYS Yachtswomen of the Year for her fantastic and ever-consistent campaign, including successes at the Queensland and Victorian State Championships. All the best to JC and her team for the Worlds in San Francisco, as well as to the other Sydney boats participating.

What's next? We are close to finalising the 2017-18 season schedule, and will shortly publish an exciting programme of great Etchells racing. The Milson Silver Goblets will move forward to 13-18 November 2017. The NSW State Championship will be conducted by RSYS from 16–18 February 2018, with a programme being finalised to manage Saturday harbour traffic. The World Qualifiers for Brisbane will be held throughout March. The full calendar will be available shortly.

With so much ahead, we also want to improve communication with our fleet. This season will see the introduction of a fortnightly e-newsletter to members, their crew, and those who are interested. We will work to achieve greater coverage of Etchells racing in the Sydney clubs' newsletters, and be more active on social media. This media activity will enhance our fleet visibility, and encourage new boats and crews into the class.
