"Noel Paterson and David Healey as the night begins"

The 2016/17 season seemed to be over before it began with an earlier Easter this year, which made the second half of the season quite short. The Fleet continued to grow, and in fact is still in growth mode as we enter the Winter recess.

Peter Wright has bought AUS849 ‘Yep’, Matt Ramaly has moved his boat, AUS1292, to RQYS, has joined the club and is now racing with the ‘Brisbane’ Fleet. AUS418 ‘Tuco’ has also changed to new hands. Last but not least, Olympic Gold Medallist, Tom King, has moved to Brisbane, and his boat ‘Iron Lotus’ will live at RQ from this June.

Black Tie Dinner

The season was rounded off beautifully with the Brisbane Etchells ‘Black Tie Dinner’ on the 27th May. Ninety-four people attended in their finest regalia, which gave the ladies an opportunity to frock up and they did! The infamous ‘Yome’ awards (an award you really don’t want to receive) seemed to go off well, with Marty Sinclair being crowned the ‘King’ of the Fleet, and being adorned in appropriate garb, and John Warlow being dressed up as a pirate for anti-social on water behaviour etc, etc.

The coveted, ‘Pick of the Year’ trophy, was won by Bradley Ginnivan, for his never ending support ashore for the Brisbane Etchells Fleet. Thanks BGR. David Healey was presented with a special award for his tireless dedication to the Fleet. David’s contribution is enormous. Thanks Heales.

I must make a special mention of Terry Passey, who of late has overseen the widening of the hardstand area and the installation of the tie down rings to the same area. Virtually everything you see on the Etchells hardstand has an element of TP about it. What can I say, thanks TP.

The Australasian Winter Championship has just been held in Mooloolaba and out of a forty-one-boat fleet, RQYS had no less than twelve boats racing in the regatta.

2018 World Championship RQYS – October 2018

The coming season will be a big one for the fleet, with the Qualification Series for the 2018 World Championship to be held at RQ, and running the full length of the season. Brisbane Fleet has been granted a 50% allocation for the 2018 home Worlds. The allocation is based on, in our case, 50% of the registered and financial boats with the National body in the Brisbane Etchells Fleet. That number is currently 34, so on today’s numbers, seventeen RQ boats will be racing for RQYS. The International allocation will be around 25 – 30%, so we have done well.

The Qualification Series is to be run in conjunction with the ‘Squadron Championship’ races for the coming season, plus the ‘Brisbane Fleet Championship’, which is to held in mid April, that is a total of twenty–two races. All races are evenly weighted. It is expected that up to twenty-three boats will contest the Qualification series.

So you want to race? – well here it is!
