Lake Macquarie Yacht Club and Etchells Fleet is inviting Etchells sailors to compete in the 2010 Australian Etchells Championship to be held at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club from 11 to 16 January.

Fleet captain Mark Phillips said planning for the event is progressing well. "We are estimating 50 entries." While 50 is a large fleet size Phillips said they have had this number of boats previously at the State titles and the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club facilities will certainly be able to cope. "The race organisation is used to these sort of numbers. Everyone is looking forward to it."

The event website,, is up and running with plenty of information on accommodation options. Phillips advises there are no arrangements in place as yet for charter boats.

The event organisers advise "the race course will be a little different to that used at our October long-weekend regattas and for the State championships. This will remove any local knowledge component and allow for longer legs. The course area will extend further south to Wangi Point and north to Toronto Bay and Bolton Point.

"Lake Macquarie offers a unique Etchells sailing experience. Australia's largest saltwater coastal lake provides a non-tidal, uncluttered race track, and a flat water level playing field. Prevailing winds in January are north- east sea breezes punctuated by southerly wind streams. Numerous sailing classes have acknowledged the lake to be one of the finest venues in the land."

Phillips said the feedback from the mid-winters indicated there are plenty of Etchells planning on coming to the Nationals and maybe a few overseas competitors.

The Notice of Race is expected to be published on the event website in early August.
